A SENSE FOR ALL SEASONS

"Look at your house as an artist would and have fun creating vignettes as a painter would a still life.."
KRISTIN PERERS

Your home should be a portrait of who you are.

YOUR HOME SHOULD BE INTOXICATING.

I’ve always loved the idea of harnessing the senses to invoke a certain feeling or emotion, particularly when it comes to decorating. Sight, sound, touch, smell and taste; these are all how we interpret our world and experience pleasure. When it comes to your own home and season you’re in, you can use these senses to cultivate a very deliberate experience for yourself and your guests. After all, your home should never stop intoxicating you. It’s your pleasure den, a hideaway just for you. Fill it with objects and experiences that make your soul come alive, time and time again.

Here in South Africa, we’re in the midst of winter, but  the seasons are very mild and so often overlooked. Which can be a great pity. The seasons aren’t just how we measure our lives, but they’re also an opportunity to celebrate rituals and traditions of our own.
Which is why over  the last month, I’ve really considered how to make my home more inviting and hygge-ier (is that even an adjective?) this winter. Not only that, I’ve also contemplated what traditions I can start celebrating to make this time year more special and something I look forward to.

Click on the cards below to see some of these “sensory” ideas (and while they relate to winter, you can tweak them for any season).

Amuse-toi bien!

Decor

Buy seasonal flowers and scatter them throughout your house. You can also switch up your table linen or scatter cushions to match the season.

Lighting

Use general, task and accent lighting, to create a warm atmosphere. Winter lighting should be warm, soft and subtle (and there should always be a plethora of candles!).

Music

Create a seasonal playlist. In winter I love listening to Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and always Billie Holiday. Always.

Fabrics

Winter fabrics should be heavy, soft and warm. Layer your couches and chairs with soft throws. And add cashmere and faux fur to your winter capsule wardrobe.

Warmth

Keep your home at a good temperature - there's nothing worse than an icy home. And while you're at it, why not switch from quick showers to longer, luxurious baths?

Scent

In winter fill your home with woodier, deeper scents. I’m in love with Millefiori’s scented candles and room sprays. And don’t forget your bath - add Badedas or even mustard bath.

Food

Become famous for a soup, stew or biscuit recipe. Switch your peppermint tea for chai or lavender tea and take it with a cinnamon or shortbread biscuit. And don’t forget to enjoy the fruit of the season.

Ayurveda

Ritucharyana are seasonal Ayurvedic practices to help you stay in balance. In winter, they recommend eating more warm, grounding foods and drinks, performing self-massage and getting to bed earlier.

Bedding

Switch to a heavy, feather duvet in winter and add warms throws over the top. Use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to warm the bed for about an hour before you get in. Now that's the height of luxury!

Stay creative. Stay warm.

Bonsoir mes amis!
